French lunchbox in Sydney

Lunchbox
Hélène Canavan
Canavan Cookbooks
It is the start of the long week-end. That means a four-day week with only four lunch box duties. ouf!

Towards the end of the term, I seem to completely lack the inspiration and energy to perform yet another early morning lunch box duty for the children At that point I usually go back to Lunchbox, the book written in Australia by a French mum and 5 chefs. I like the easy recipes with a French twist (Baguette Parisienne, Couscous Tabbouleh, Clafoutis....) and particularly the philosophy behind the book which is to always offer fresh, healthy and nutritious food. The whole process is much smoother if you take just a few moments to plan your lunch box menus during the week-end.

Sydney Writer's Festival 2008

Grey Souls
by Philippe Claudel
Phoenix House Books

The French writer, Philippe Claudel, was guest of the 2008 Sydney Writer's Festival .
He has won several prestigious French literary awards in particular for his beautiful novel Grey Souls which has been translated in 23 languages
The novels of Philippe Claudel seem quite dark at first. Grey Souls is particularly gruesome. It is the story of a murder in a small French provincial town, with the violence of the Great War in the background. But his novels are also full of humanity thanks to the attention given to each character, the elegance of the language and the fact that the story doesn’t try to have a clear cut resolution.
The stories are set in darkness but there is always a light which reveal the characters in a tender and redeeming way as in the paintings of
Georges de La Tour, a French artist and fellow native of Lorraine.
Philippe Claudel is no stranger to the world of cinema too. Grey Souls has been adapted for the screen and the writer has just finished directing the movie I have loved you so long with Kristin Scott Thomas. This should contribute to further broaden his audience especially with the English speaking public.
Les Âmes Grises
Philippe Claudel
