The French writer, Philippe Claudel, was guest of the 2008 Sydney Writer's Festival .
He has won several prestigious French literary awards in particular for his beautiful novel Grey Souls which has been translated in 23 languages
The novels of Philippe Claudel seem quite dark at first. Grey Souls is particularly gruesome. It is the story of a murder in a small French provincial town, with the violence of the Great War in the background. But his novels are also full of humanity thanks to the attention given to each character, the elegance of the language and the fact that the story doesn’t try to have a clear cut resolution.
The stories are set in darkness but there is always a light which reveal the characters in a tender and redeeming way as in the paintings of Georges de La Tour, a French artist and fellow native of Lorraine.
Philippe Claudel is no stranger to the world of cinema too. Grey Souls has been adapted for the screen and the writer has just finished directing the movie I have loved you so long with Kristin Scott Thomas. This should contribute to further broaden his audience especially with the English speaking public.

Son œuvre a été récompensée par plusieurs prix littéraires en France, en particulier son très beau roman Les Âmes grises qui a été traduit en 23 langues et qui a le prix reçu Renaudot 2003, le grand prix des lectrices de Elle et a été élu meilleur livre 2003 par le magazine Lire.
Les romans de Philippe Claudel, à prime abord, ne sont pas gais. L’histoire des Âmes grises est même franchement sinistre : un meurtre dans une petite ville de province du nord-est de la France avec en arrière fond la violence de la première guerre mondiale. Mais est-ce du à l’élégance de l’écriture, à l’attention donnée a chaque personnage ou à l’histoire qui ne cherche pas de résolution trop tranchée, les livres de Philippe Claudel sont pleins d’humanité.
Les histoires baignent dans les ténèbres mais il y a toujours une lumière qui éclaire de façon tendre et rédemptrice les personnages à la manière des tableaux de Georges de la Tour, peintre originaire comme Philipe Claudel, de Lorraine.
Philippe Claudel n’est également pas étranger au monde du cinéma. Les Âmes grises a été adapté au grand écran et l’auteur vient de diriger le film
il y a longtemps que je t’aime avec Kristin Scott Thomas. Ce qui devrait encore plus élargir son auditoire en particulier auprès du public anglophone.
